Marlin fishing is one of the most thrilling challenges any angler can face. They are fast, athletic, and can grow to be quite large. In addition, Marlin perform acrobatics worthy of a bullfighter with the strength of a bull once hooked. So it’s no surprise that Marlin fishing has almost legendary status among anglers worldwide.
Sodwana Bay – anglers’ paradise
With deep water just a few miles offshore and a plethora of canyons and offshore reefs, Sodwana Bay attracts many gamefish and billfish, including Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, and Sailfish.
Marlins, like Sailfish and Swordfish, are members of the billfish family – highly predatory species that slash at and stun their prey with their spear-like ‘bill.’ In addition, they are a migratory species that lives in tropical or subtropical waters and migrates based on the temperature of the water.
Spotting Marlins
The Blue Marlin dives deeper and wears out faster than other Marlin. It is, however, a powerful and aggressive fighter capable of running fast and long distances while leaping high in the air in impressive acrobatic displays.
Black Marlin typically swim in nearshore waters, around reefs and islands, but they can also be found in the open sea.
Striped marlin are known for their fighting ability and spending more time in the air than in the water once hooked. In addition, they are well-known for their long runs and tail walks and ‘greyhounding’ across the surface in a series of leaps and bounds.
Marlin fishing lures
Marlin are aggressive, predatory fish that react well to the splash and trail of a well-presented artificial lure. However, the question of which lure to use when trolling for Marlin is contentious. Therefore, don’t disregard live bait. However, because trolling with live bait requires the boat to travel slower to keep the bait alive, you should only use it when the fishing area you’re covering is relatively small.
